Fidel Bofil

Fidel Bofil was born in 1934 in Vic, in the “Comarca d'Osona” (province of Barcelona). He completed his pre-university studies (Batxillerat superior amb Examen d'Estat) at the Collége de Sant Miguel dels Sants. After studying plastic arts, he devoted himself professionally to painting, exhibiting all over the world. His works are in more than fifty museums and international public institutions. A considerable literature has been dedicated to him.

As a writer he has contributed to the Madrid magazines Ritmo and Aria Jazz and to the Joventuts Musicals bulletins. Editor and artistic director of the magazine “Oroflama”, he has written articles in Catalan for the newspapers ‘Ausona’ and “El 9 Nou” and for the magazine “Llengua Nacional”, Barcelona, and in French for the “Courrier des Galeries”, Paris, among others. He is currently writing articles on gastronomy and has a passion for the popular medieval Catalan cuisine. He is the author of several books of prose (Meltemi, Menjars de fonda i taverna, De la boira a la llum) and poetry (‘A hores d'ara’, ‘American Suite’, ‘Balada dels monts perduts’, ‘Les hores blaves’, ‘De Grécia estant’ and ‘Preludi d'un decensis’). He is working on his memoirs and several stories, including a collection of fairy tales.

He has been awarded several literary prizes, including “Ginesta d'Or”, “Flor Natural”, “Medalla de la Vila de Perpinya”, “Premi Carles Grando”, “Premi Fransec Catala” and “Gran Medalla de Poesia” at the “Jocs Florals del Rossello”, 'Premio La Pace nel Mondo' and ‘Premio Citta di Brugherio’ in Italy and various prizes for poetry and prose from the ‘Centre Européen pour la Promotion de Arts et la Lettres’ in France (Thionville).

He is an ardent and active defender of Catalan culture. In Vic, he was the founder and first president of the ‘Jonvetus Musicals’ and of the association of painters of the Vic region, ‘El Cloquer’. An indefatigable traveller, he has visited many countries. After spending two years on the island of Amorgos, one of the small Greek Cyclades, he now lives in Crete and devotes his time to literature and painting.
